Aberdare National park is a park filled with vast moorlands ,waterfalls and dense forests that is sure to be a favourite for nature lovers. The place was originally called Nyandarua but was later changed to Aberdare after who was the president of the Royal Geographical Society at the time. The park is best experienced through the various hikes cutting across the various trails in the park.

Attractions

Waterfalls

The park is home to a couple of waterfalls including the most famous one Karuru waterfalls with an outstanding height of over 300 metres. Other waterfalls in the park include the Gura waterfall which is one the other side of the same george that Karuru waterfalls is in. There is also the Chania waterfall as well as the Magura waterfalls. The Magura waterfalls is particularly interesting since it has a cave behind it known as the Queen’s Cave.

Dragon teeth

These are very tall volcanic rock formations that seem to emerge from the moorlands in Aberdare National Park . Their rugged nature is what gave them their name “dragon teeth”. Although unlike dragon teeth they do not always follow each other sequentially ,instead they are scattered along the floor of the Aberdare National Park along the hike to Mt. Saitama Peak.

Mountain Peaks / Aberdare Ranges

The Aberdare Ranges or sometimes referred to as the Nyandarua ranges are a series of peaks found within the Aberdare National Park that stretches a length of 100km. The highest peak is Ol Donyo Lesatima with a height of 4100m. Other peaks include Table Mountain (3,817m), Chebuswa (3,364m), Rurimieria (3,860m), Kinangop (3,906m),Elephant Hill (3,625m).The two highest peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima and Kinangop, are located at almost opposite extremes of the ranges, separated by extensive rolling moorlands that is above 3000m

Wildlife

There are various wildlife in the national park although not regularly seen but they include the black rhino, black serval, black leopard (seldom seen) and the mountain bongo (a huge forest antelope). Other animals include elephants, buffalos, white and black colobus monkey, leopard,

Mugumo (fig) tree

Within the Aberdare National Park there is a very large fig tree. This fig tree in particular has some historical significance because it was used by the Mau Mau to store messages for their members to read. It served as sort of a “post office” and was later renamed to Kimathi Post Office after a very prominent Mau Mau leader, Dedan Kimathi
