Mt Kenya National Park & Reserve is home to the tallest mountain in Kenya standing at 5199m above sea level, Mt Kenya. Due to the high elevation of the area the place has cold temperatures. The park has an extensive forest and a couple of lakes and tarns within the park, coming to around 20 in total. The flora in the area includes a montane forest at the heights of 2000m which are green lush forest mainly consisting of cedar and podo. As you climb past 2500m you will start to see the bamboo forest and patches of small trees and glades. Above 3000m to 3500m you will be met by patches of shrubs and short grass above that you will find moorland. At this altitude animals are quite rare to find.

The park has a couple of glaciers including Lewis Glacier, Diamond Glacier,Krapf Glacier and Gregory Glacier.

The mountain is the second tallest in Kenya and has three peaks;Point Batian(5199m), Point Batian(5188M) and Point Nellion(4984m). Mt Kenya is an extinct volcano and it is snow capped. To the Agikuyu community who refer to it as Kirinyaga, it is regarded as the home of Ngai, their God.
