Lewa is a 62000 acre conservancy located in Isiolo, Meru. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and boasts the largest population of Grevy's Zebras with 350+ individuals living within its boundaries. It is also an important conservation area for black rhinos. The conservancy is also home to 450+ bird species making it an ideal location for bird lovers. Lewa conservancy began as a cattle ranch, and over time began supporting the endangered black rhinos in around 1980 before becoming a sanctuary for wildlife in 1995.

Wildlife

Lewa conservancy has a bountiful amount of wildlife including lions, elephants, giraffes, warthogs , zebras, ostriches as well as rhinos.

Elephant Underpass

In efforts to reduce human and wildlife conflict in the area Lewa built an elephant underpass that bypasses the Meru-Nanyuki highway which helps the elephants migrate safely as they pass through the area.

Behind the Scenes Activity

Lewa offers a behinds the scenes of the various tasks that go on in Lewa including dog tracking , School visits,Security operations,the elephant underpass , Community health and their efforts in ensuring access to water for the local communities

Grevy’s Zebras

Grevy’s Zebras are the largest of the Zebras and are predominantly found in Northern Kenya as well as Ethiopia. They have larger ears and narrower stripes than the plain zebras. Lewa is one of the places that can boast a large population of Grevy’s Zebras with a population of 350+ living within the park.
