Ol Pejeta conservancy is a 90,000 acre conservancy and was the last home of the now extinct white rhinos. Ol Pejeta is one of the leading conservancies in Kenya and is home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in Kenya. Ol Pejeta is also the only place in Kenya where tourists can see chimpanzees which are native to the savannah and tropical forest of Africa. The conservancy has a very large density of predators thus can be easily spotted during an excursion. The conservancy efforts towards conservation enabled it to win the Africas’ Leading Conservation Company awards in 2022.

Wildlife

The conservancy is buzzling with wildlife with sex resident prides of lions living within the area. Other animals in the park include elephants, African wild dogs, porcupines, cheetahs, leopards, mongoose and most notably the Black Rhinos. Every since the conservation efforts were stepped up the number of Black rhinos have been increasing in the area.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

This chimpanzee sanctuary was set up to act as a refuge for chimpanzees that were rescued from the black market trade. Additionally, any chimpanzees found living in unsuitable conditions are also brought here so that they can be taken care of properly. Interestingly, each of the Chimpanzees has a name. The chimpanzees are increasingly being brought to the conservancy which now total over 35 individuals.

Rhino Memorial

The only rhino memorial in Kenya can be found here. The memorial was set up to help raise awareness about the plight of rhinos. Located to the east of Ol Pejeta there you will find all the rhinos that were killed during the poached epidemic

Baraka

Baraka is a black rhino who serves as the ambassador for all the black rhinos in the conservancy. Baraka can be found in a small enclosure where he is kept for safety. Baraka lost sight in both eyes due to a fight and it's currently very difficult for him to survive on his own. Tourists are allowed to come close to Baraka, getting an opportunity to touch the big rhino.
